SECOND EVENT THIS NOVEMBER
With paul kelly, missy higgins and illy
After the overwhelming success of its inaugural event in March, A WEEKEND In The Gardens makes a triumphant return this November with three incredible nights of music headlined by Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins and Illy.
The concerts in Melbourne’s iconic Royal Botanic Gardens take place on Friday November 17, Saturday November 18 and Sunday November 19.
Developed by the team behind the highly successful a day on the green winery series, A WEEKEND In The Gardens was instantly embraced by music lovers and brought nearly 12,000 Melburnians into the beautiful surrounds of the Gardens.
One of Australia’s most loved and respected artists, PAUL KELLY kicks off the weekend on Friday night, in the only Victorian show of his Life Is Fine national tour. Joining him is Grammy Award-winning, American folk troubadour and roots rocker STEVE EARLE and MIDDLE KIDS.
Saturday night sees ARIA Award-winning rapper and hip-hop artist ILLY head a lineup that will also feature THUNDAMENTALS, SPIT SYNDICATE and BIRDZ. The event will be hosted by JESSWAR.
One of the country’s finest singer-songwriters, MISSY HIGGINS will light up Sunday night with her irresistible melodies, poignant ballads and poetic pop songs, along with DUSTIN TEBBUTT, ALL OUR EXES LIVE IN TEXAS and HARRY JAKAMARRA.
Promoter Michael Newton of Roundhouse Entertainment says the stellar lineup across all three concerts will ensure this second event builds on the success of the first.
“The artists and audiences have responded enthusiastically to having a beautiful, intimate outdoor concert space in the Royal Botanic Gardens in the middle of this amazing city,” Michael said. “The lineup of acts is first-class, and the food and beverage options are fantastic. Along with the Royal Botanic Gardens, we are very proud to be presenting another weekend of great entertainment in the gardens.”
In addition to the outstanding lineup of music, A WEEKEND In The Gardens will again be serving up a fine feast in a vastly expanded relaxing area called The Eatery. Foodies will be tantalised with offerings from Melbourne’s most popular food trucks and operators, along with cocktails, spirits and premium beers.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 17
As one of Australia’s greatest singer-songwriters, Paul Kelly’s songs are deeply engrained into the Australian psyche. A poet and a storyteller, his stories are synonymous with our landscape, history and lifestyle. Paul has just released his latest record, Life Is Fine, one of his strongest and most evocative albums to date. His influential career includes 23 studio albums, several film soundtracks, live albums, a feature-length documentary and a critically acclaimed memoir. Hit songs include the likes of Before Too Long, Darling It Hurts, Dumb Things, To Her Door and How To Make Gravy. In 1997 following the release of his compilation album Songs From The South, which peaked at number two in Australia and is certified quadruple platinum, Paul was inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame. One of our most revered and respected performers, Paul Kelly continues to cross musical boundaries and influence the next generation of Australian musicians.
Steve Earle is a Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter whose albums seamlessly blend rock, folk and country. Lauded as one of America’s greatest living storytellers, he is equally acclaimed as a folk troubadour, a rockabilly raver, a contemplative bluesman, a honky-tonk rounder, a snarling rocker and even a bluegrass practitioner. Add record producer, author and actor to his extensive CV, as well as collaborations with Sheryl Crow, The Indigo Girls, The Pogues, Lucinda Williams, Shawn Colvin, Patti Smith, Chris Hillman, The Fairfield Four and The Del McCoury Band. His songs have been used in more than fifty films and have been recorded by such legends such as Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Joan Baez, Carl Perkins, Vince Gill and Waylon Jennings. Since his 1986 breakthrough album Guitar Town, Steve has released 16 studio albums including his latest recording So You Wanna Be An Outlaw.
Sydney trio Middle Kids blazed out of the gates with their alt-rock single Edge Of Town, from their 2017 debut self-titled EP. Days after the release, Middle Kids made their live TV debut on US show Conan. With their international profile bolstered by Elton John announcing he was a fan and host Conan O’Brien calling them “fantastic” and “brilliant”, the song has accrued a staggering five million plays on Spotify! Led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Hannah Joy, with Tim Fitz (producer and multi-instrumentalist) and Harry Day (drums) rounding out the band, Middle Kids combine echoes of the female-fronted indie rock bands of the ’90s and early 2000s, like Sleater-Kinney, The Breeders and Belly. Middle Kids shine especially bright live with their anthemic sound, soaring melodic vocals, irresistible hooky tunes and wide-eyed optimism and joy.
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 18
Multi-Platinum Australian hip-hop artist Illy has made a habit out of defying expectations. His breakthrough album in 2012, Bring It Back, earned him an ARIA Award for Best Urban Album. His latest album, Two Degrees, gave him his first number one record when it debuted at the top of the ARIA chart in November 2016, beating out the likes of Leonard Cohen and Christmas albums from Michael Buble and Olivia Newton-John. Featuring the smash hits Papercuts (featuring Vera Blue) and Catch 22 (featuring Rudimental’s Anne-Marie), Illy was nominated for six ARIA Awards including Best Male Artist and Song Of The Year. Illy has continued to tour with appearances at key Australian festivals as well as his own extensive solo tour, while evolving as an artist across all spectrums of pop, hip-hop, electro and indie.
Thundamentals have well and truly earned their mantle as one of Australia’s most exciting and dynamic live acts and finest hip-hop groups. The band reached new heights earlier this year when their latest release and fourth studio album, Everyone We Know, debuted at number two on the ARIA chart with Rolling Stone declaring them, “A creative force to be reckoned with.” Touring extensively throughout Australia and Europe, the band have fostered a connection with fans that has blossomed into something truly special. Packed with a vast and impressive catalogue of forward-thinking songs, their music is an epic celebration of music rooted in hip-hop while offering something for anyone who simply loves music.
Sydney duo Spit Syndicate are one of Australia’s most exciting hip-hop acts. Barely out of their teens, they released their debut album, Towards the Light, in 2008, which was nominated for an ARIA Award. This was followed by their breakout album, 2013’s Sunday Gentlemen, featuring singles Beauty In The Bricks, Folly and Amazing. The band’s most recent release, One Good Shirt Had Us All Fly, has been lauded by critics as their strongest work to date. Spit Syndicate are renowned for their explosive live performances, which has seen them perform at music festivals and sold-out headline shows across Australia.
Since his 2013 Birdz Eye View EP, Birdz has been at the forefront of the emerging hip-hop movement in Australia and has made a name for himself as a rapper with something to say and he’s not shy about it. After a slew of incredible singles including the anthemic call-to-action Black Lives Matter, the Northern Territory rapper’s debut album, Train Of Thought, is a no-holds-barred examination of Indigenous Australia. Birdz has solidified his spot as one of the most exciting acts in the Australian hip-hop scene.
Brisbane-based hip-hop artist Jesswar is one of Australia’s hottest up-and-coming artists. Having already toured with 360 and supported the likes of Tkay Maidza, David Dallas, Bliss n Eso, Allday, Akala and most recently Lady Leshurr, she is as ferocious as she is fearless and commands audiences when her hands are on the mic.
SUNDAY NOVEMBER 19
Missy Higgins is one of our most beloved singer-songwriters. Her first three albums, The Sound Of White, On A Clear Night and The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, have sold more than a million copies in her homeland. Each went to number one on the Australian charts and each has also been recognised with ARIA Awards. Missy’s fourth studio album OZ, was an eclectic mix of Aussie cover versions released with a companion book of related essays to rave reviews. In February 2016 Missy drew global attention to the plight of Syrian refugees with her aching ballad Oh Canada. The unforgettable benefit single raised significant funds for the Asylum Resource Centre and reiterated Missy’s commitment to social justice in Australia and around the world. Most recently, Missy released Torchlight – a powerful, emotive piano ballad written for Australian film Don’t Tell starring Rachel Griffiths and Jack Thompson.
Dustin Tebbutt arrived on Australia’s music scene in 2013 with acclaimed debut solo recording The Breach. Alongside glowing reviews and a quickly growing fan base, Dustin’s music boldly gained momentum from its humble and organic start, following it up with EP Home in 2015. Word-of-mouth spread about his distinctly evocative music and his 2016 debut album, First Light, marked a creative progression for Dustin, as well as a staggering increase in Spotify listeners with more than 8 million listeners streaming his songs! Dustin recently embarked on a national tour with Lisa Mitchell. An intrinsically collaborative affair, the Distant Call Tour saw Dustin and Lisa perform together for the first time, sharing the same band and combining their collective energy with a carefully curated set.
ALL OUR EXES LIVE IN TEXAS
All Our Exes Live In Texas is a fantasy draft of Sydney’s finest singer-songwriters – Elana Stone, Katie Wighton, Hannah Crofts and Georgia Mooney – combining in four-part indie-folk heaven. On mandolin, ukulele, accordion and guitar, the Exes deliver tunes that are tastefully crafted within the context of a spontaneous, playful and utterly charming live show. With four songwriters and four unique voices, the Exes are a powerhouse of harmonies, charm and songwriting prowess, proving they truly are the most badass girl folk group ever. Their debut album, When We Fall, came in at number eight on the ARIA chart in March 2017, as well as garnering a string of 4 and 5-star reviews from Rolling Stone, The Australian and Double J.
What happens when a croc skinner puts down his knife, leaves the Kimberley in his truck, with his banjo in tow? A chilling collection of songs that have been described as, “Gothic Australiana”! Harry Jakamarra forged his songwriting, banjo and guitar skills in settings as diverse as the desert sands north of Timbuktu, the choked back streets of Varanasi on the Ganges River, and the uninhabited reaches of the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. His captivating stories manifest in dark, emotionally charged songs. His powerful poetry, original voice and raw, intricate banjo and guitar sounds are exquisitely framed in his latest recording, produced by Australian music legend Jeff Lang.
The Eatery is where patrons can chill out in a relaxed and vibrant space with picnic tables and seated areas in a vastly expanded area, surrounded by a variety of high quality food and drink stalls.
Vendors include Royale Brothers, Willy’s Fried Chicken, American BBQ Smokers, Hermano, Proper Fish & Chips and Señor Churro.
And what better way to celebrate the Royal Botanic Gardens than to use some of its native ingredients in the offerings in the Native Cocktail Bar. Wattle seeds, lemon myrtle, eucalyptus citriodora, muntries and riberries will nestle next to the vodka, gin and whisky for our cocktails with a botanical punch!
